CrossFit Mallorca: Summer Athletes Camp

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to train in near perfect weather conditions?

Not having to worry about your grip on a freezing cold rig?

Maybe doing a warm up without a woolly hat on?

Welcome to CrossFit Mallorca.

Only a short flight from the UK, CrossFit Mallorca is a 550m2 state of the art, beautifully designed box. High ceilings, fan cooled, well equipped and a stylish outdoor training area (plus bbq). It’s easy to spend the whole day here (and I did!).

Established in 2011 by 5 times Regional Games Competitor, Rob Martin. Rob’s reputation as an excellent CrossFit athlete and coach has attracted athletes and celebrities to train at CrossFit Mallorca from all over the world, such as Sara Sigmundsdottir and DJ Steve Aoki.

Rob moved to Majorca in 2006 and lives there with his partner and their two children. Originally from Essex he worked as a personal trainer in the UK before making the move over here. It was on a golf holiday in the States that he first came across the fitness philosophy that has revolutionised gyms and workouts around the globe: CrossFit.

“I’d always been interested in new training methods so when I heard about it I wanted to try it right away”. “CrossFit immediately appealed to me because it is actually a sport. Coming from a rugby background, I love training but without a purpose, a goal, it can feel a bit pointless. I went in to that first class thinking I was strong, but I was completely wrong! There were girls there lifting more weights than me. It challenged me, everything was stripped away back to the bone, and there wasn’t anywhere to hide.”

Don’t be fooled by Rob’s calm, easy going demeanour. He is incredibly focused and has achieved so much in the CrossFit world. His track record in impressive. In 2013, a couple of years after opening CrossFit Mallorca, which must have been time consuming and stressful, he competed in the Regionals in Denmark, finishing 8th in Europe. This was the same year that Sam Briggs won the regionals and went on to win The Games. It was an excellent year for the Brits!

2017 and 2018 have seen Rob compete in the master’s category (35-39) and he is still pulling out some impressive results. In 2018 he was the 34th Fittest Man in Spain. So clearly this is a man who understands CrossFit. Luckily for us mere mortals, he is happy to pass on his knowledge and regularly leads the classes at CrossFit Mallorca. And you don’t have to be a Mallorcan resident to go. This summer Rob is holding a 5 day Athletes training camp alongside 2017 Games Finalist and Rogue Athlete, Jonne Koski.

JONNE KOSKI

One of the top up-and-comers in CrossFit, Rogue athlete Jonne Koski exploded onto the international stage in 2014, winning the Euro Regionals at just 19 years of age. A year later, he took 1st place at the expanded Meridian Regional and raised plenty of eyebrows with his 9th place finish at the CrossFit Games. After having to withdraw due to injury in 2016, Jonne stormed back with another Top 10 finish at the ‘17 Games, notching 2nd place in the “Run Swim Run” and “Triple G Chipper” events. With a whole career ahead of him, the sky is clearly the limit right now for this skilled and determined athlete.

Koski’s athletic background includes six years of competitive youth swimming in his native Finland. By 16, he had shifted his attention to CrossFit, eventually coming under the wing of fellow Finn and Rogue athlete Mikko Salo—the 2009 CrossFit Games champion. Jonne continues to train out of CF Varasto in his hometown of Pori, Finland.

At the start of 2019 he won the 3 man competition in WODAPALOOZA, competing with fellow Games athletes Adrian Mundwiler and BK Gudmundsson.

But don’t worry if you can’t make the Athletes Training Camp this year. The Balearic Island of Mallorca is a beautiful place to go on holiday. An island with turquoise blue waters, secret coves, soft golden sands, lush green foliage, rugged mountains, picturesque villages and a vibrant capital city. The weather is perfect from March to October and if you’ve been CrossFitting for 3 months or more, you can book in to any of the classes. The box is easily accessible from all parts of the island (you’ll probably need a car, unless you are that crazy type who will run wearing a tactical weight vest - you know who you are!!).

You will be made very welcome and can spend some time chilling out, sipping a fresh juice smoothie and browsing the gorgeous range of CrossFit Mallorca t-shirts and vests.

Maybe I’ll see you there this summer?
